While information and communication are linked, they are different concepts. Information is basically raw data, while communication involves the processing of information in a way that makes sense to the individual. As technology becomes more sophisticated, an ever-growing segment of society will have less access to information and less knowledge about how to gain access to it. Children who are reared in homes and attend schools with higher rates of technological adoption will have more advantages than others. This will widen the gap between the poor and the better-off. Increased reliance upon electronic information exchange may mean less interpersonal contact as people spend more time at computer terminals. In addressing these issues, the primary concern should be to develop a greater understanding of the communication process.
